Storm Season Preparation – Save our water – Save your $$$

Storm Season is here.  In ADDITION to your normal storm prep and safety precautions, we urge you to:

  1. TURN OFF / SHUT DOWN / DISCONNECT water lines to unnecessary outside areas like DOCKS, WATER FOUNTAINS, IRRIGATION SYSTEMS, POOLS…   In past year’s storms, we lost more drinking water to broken dock lines than any other .
  2. IF EVACUATING, TURN OFF WATER TO YOUR WHOLE HOUSE.  Most homes have a main water shutoff valve, easy to use once you know where it is.
  3.  FILL BATHTUB WITH WATER.  This could be useful should our water plant go down for several days.  While you may not want to drink it, it could be used to flush toilets, water plants and pets, cleaning…
  4. BOIL WATER.  Anytime there is a possibility of losing water pressure, we issue a Potential Boil Water Notice.  Losing water pressure can allow ground contaminants into the water lines and testing to get recertified can take 2-3 days.  When in doubt, boil your water.
  5. UPDATE YOUR CONTACT INFO. Make sure you are getting the latest water system information.  Email and phone number changes should be submitted to the HOA Manager.  If you have renters, make sure we have their info as well.

WHY BOTHER?

Drinking water is one of the most valuable and rationed resources in a storm’s aftermath.  No one wants to waste it.  And no one wants to pay for wasted water, but every drop that passes your water meter affects YOUR water bill.   When one house has a dock line pouring water into the intercostal, no big deal, but when 10+ dock/irrigation lines are spewing water, our system cannot provide water pressure for fire hydrants or possibly maintain enough pressure for regular household use.
